Gillingham and Walsall kick off the League Two campaign at Priestfield Stadium hoping to improve on mid-table finishes last term.
The Gills limped home to 17th place and the Saddlers, beaten finalists in the previous season's play-offs, suffered a mid-season collapse that saw them end up 13th.
Mat Sadler was axed by Walsall as a result of their poor form in March and former Huddersfield boss Lee Grant has taken the reins after Darren Byfield saw out the remainder of the campaign on an interim basis.
Grant enjoyed a winning start in the dugout as his Saddlers side shocked Championship Bristol City in the first round of the Carabao Cup last week.
Gillingham, embarking on their second full season under Gareth Ainsworth's management, made a losing start to competitive action as they were beaten 3-0 by Luton in the cup on home soil.
