TV tonight: The Gilded Age returns in all its glossy Julian Fellowes’ glory

9pm, Sky Atlantic

Julian Fellowes' glossy, airy period confection returns. The Gilded Age has now happily embraced its own lack of real nutritional value and, towards the end of the third season, its ratings swelled as a result. In the opener, Agnes is scheming to retain her position in society and there's a subplot of real modern resonance as old money starts being threatened by crass, arriviste monopolists.

A Place in the Sun

6pm, Channel 4

Now that it's dark before dinnertime, the show about upping sticks from the UK feels like perfect vicarious viewing. The Dordogne and a gorgeous Greek island feature later in the week but the new run kicks off with a couple contemplating retirement on the balmy Costa Blanca. What can a £450k budget get them?

9pm, BBC Two

In the context of the current hysteria around migration, this two-part documentary has been sobering. As it concludes, it's 1972 and a month after Uganda's swaggering dictator Idi Amin issued an ultimatum to the country's Asian population. They must leave within 90 days, taking nothing more than one suitcase and £50 each. Will Britain take them?

9pm, Channel 4

It's the penultimate chapter of David Harewood's suave legal drama, and if you think collapsing would keep this dogged duty solicitor down, think again ("It wasn't a heart attack, it was angina"). He escapes his hospital bed to get back on the case following a new lead on Michael's death.

10pm, Channel 4

The documentary's concluding half follows Dan, Saskia and Dec – all in their 20s – as they recover from life-threatening strokes. As Dan endures surgery to repair a hole in his skull, Saskia goes to great lengths to overcome her neurological fatigue. Dec, meanwhile, finds his psychological recovery more challenging than the physical.

Dispatches: The Taliban's War on Women

11pm, Channel 4

The 2021 US and UK withdrawal from Afghanistan, allowing the Taliban to take control, felt like a shameful betrayal. And the stories that emerge from this remarkable Dispatches documentary confirm that impression. It follows Afghans in exile as they attempt to rescue loved ones from the theocracy; a story of torture, sexual violence, erasure and extraordinary courage.
