Turner Prize nominated artworks are going on display at a gallery in what its director has called a "prestigious opportunity".

Work by four artists in the running for the prize - Simeon Barclay, Kira Freije, Marguerite Humeau and Tanoa Sasraku - will go on display at Teesside University's Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (MIMA) from 26 September.

Dr Laura Sillars, director of MIMA and dean of culture and creativity at the niversity, said of the exhibition: "While it's here, at a certain level, we are the centre of the creative universe."

The Turner Prize is awarded each year to a British artist for an outstanding exhibition or other presentation of their work.

Middlesbrough Mayor Chris Cooke said the exhibition, which includes works of mixed media, sculpture and spoken word, would provide residents with an "incredible opportunity" to see cutting-edge art in their home town".

He said: "I hope it inspires our young people to dream about what's possible.

"Why shouldn't it be them in a few years' time?

"Hosting the Turner Prize gives us a chance to show off what we have to offer to people across the country."

Established in 1984 and named after English Romantic painter Joseph Mallord William Turner, the prize is one of the most prestigious awards for visual arts.

The winner, who will be announced on 10 December, will be awarded £25,000, with £10,000 given to the other shortlisted artists.
