Trigger Point producer Jed Mercurio has teased a more “collaborative” relationship between the police and the bomb squad in the upcoming fourth season following criticism of the show.
The show, which stars Vicky McClure as the leader of a London bomb disposal unit, is returning to our screens with season 4 later this month.
Speaking about the upcoming instalment and how new guest star Julie Graham – who is joining the cast as Commander Nia Quentin – creates a new dynamic between the two teams, Mercurio said recently: "One of the areas that we mine for dramatic value on Trigger Point is the relationship between the police and the bomb squad, and I was just really thrilled that Julie brought a different energy to that."
He added: "Sometimes we are forced to create conflict between colleagues for the sake of the drama, and I know there are times when people who work in those jobs for real feel that we’re doing a disservice to the team spirit that exists in our public services.
"We are aware of that, and we do it carefully, but we wanted to reset that relationship and do something that felt more collaborative between Lana and Nia. In Vicky [McClure] and Julie’s hands it's a fantastic relationship."
McClure added: "It's nice, actually, because Nia and Lana have a very similar mindset, so there's not a battle between them."
She continued: "That’s rare, given that Lana is usually battling the powers that be, so it's nice for her to find somebody she feels is on her side and respects her skill set, woman to woman. They're able to work in harmony. Nia’s story is very interesting, I can’t say too much but people will be absolutely gripped by it."

Other returning faces in season 4 include Eric Shango as Danny, Nabil Elouahabi as Hass, Natalie Simpson as DS Helen Morgan and Maanuv Thiara as DCI Batra.
Meanwhile, new additions alongside Graham (Shetland) include Jonas Armstrong (Robin Hood, Line of Duty), who's set to take on an as-yet-undisclosed role.
Trigger Point is on ITV1 at 9pm on Sunday 30 August 2026, and will be available to stream on ITVX.
