– the electronic project of Los Angeles artist Rett Smith – has shared his new single ‘THAT’S WHAT THE MONEY IS FOR’.
The glitch-effect track is lifted from forthcoming 4-tracker ‘EP 3’, out December 4th. It’s the coda in a trilogy of EPs Smith has released in the span of a few months: four tracks of future garage and IDM that calls to mind Burial, DJ Shadow and Blawan.
Predicated around an anti-algorithmic creative ethos – an active repudiation of artistic endeavour stifled by tech fascism and digital monoculture – ‘EP 3’ is a hardware-only enterprise, brought to life by adept sound technician.
He says: “Most music right now sounds the same, and it’s made to be sold before it’s made to be felt. EP 3 is the opposite. Every sound was shaped by hand, on machines that make you commit. That’s where the human part lives, and to me, it’s the entire point.”
Lead single ‘THAT’S WHAT THE MONEY IS FOR’ is the synthetic heart of the EP. It’s a skittering number that retains a sense of rhythm and momentum throughout, augmented by eerie cut-ups and vocal interference beamed in from another dimension.
Smith recorded, produced and mixed ‘EP 3’ at his own studio Tularosa Sound in Los Angeles. Longtime collaborator Stefan Brown mastered it at Abbey Road Studios, London, as he has every Tin Lung release.
In his career, Smith has worked closely with Warp Records, with guitar contributions on Hudson Mohawke’s ‘Cry Sugar’. His debut full-length is set to follow in Spring 2027.
