Dark in a magical, dramatic, almost theatrical way, ‘Viper,’ the new single from Los Angeles band feels powerful, visceral, and intense. The song offers an early glimpse into ‘Aepex,’ the band’s sophomore album, set for release in early 2027 via Dum Dum Records.

‘Viper’ explores the fractured feminine and the resilience that emerges when someone is subjected to repeated attempts to break them down. Its lyrics take the form of a palindrome, giving the song a structure that circles back on itself and reinforces the repetition at the heart of its subject.  Musically, ‘Viper’ openly flirts with metal while retaining the punk and shoegaze elements that have become central to Taleen Kali’s sound within the L.A. underground.

Deliberately heavy and abrasive, the release stirs up emotions that are often swept under the rug, driven by guitars that surround Kali’s unsettling vocals with intensity from beginning to end. Her voice cuts through the dense distortion with a commanding, almost hypnotic force. The band’s post-punk elements remain, taking on a sharper and more unpredictable form here.

The visuals accompanying the single extend that atmosphere through the image of a bright blue viper coiled atop a red rose. Kali found inspiration in footage of a flower supporting the serpent’s entire weight without bending or breaking. The image became the single’s artwork and informed much of the music video, where the rose’s apparent fragility is set against its unexpected ability to withstand the weight above it.

‘Viper‘ also marks a significant creative chapter for Kali, who served as co-producer on a full-length album for the first time. Her expanded role places her at the center of ‘Aepex,’ shaping its identity from songwriting through production and giving this new era an even more personal imprint.
