The Traitors Ireland will return for a third season, with RTÉ confirming the renewal news following the season 2 finale.

The finale aired on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player last night (22 September), with two players emerging as winners following a tense final between the Faithful and Traitors.

Hosted by Siobhán McSweeney, the juicy game sees a group of contestants try to identify and banish the Traitors among them all while building a shared prize pot through a series of missions.

While the Faithful aim to root out the Traitors in each episode, the Traitors are secretly working against them to murder the Faithful before the final.

McSweeney, best known to UK audiences as Sister Michael in Derry Girls, has fronted the format since its debut and has previously told Radio Times that the Irish casts are rather different to casts from international versions.

Speaking of the season 1 cast, McSweeney said: "Before people even had their first cup of tea, they were chatting away. Usually it takes a while for the contestants to loosen up and to have a chat and to 'Oh, hello, what's your name?' and they're polite, whereas people were going up the stairs to the front door of the castle, they were already [chatting away]."

Looking ahead to the next run, Dr John Francis, leader of the media and entertainment psychology lab at UCD's school of psychology offered some advice for future contestants, telling RTÉ Radio 1's Morning Ireland that understanding the game is a major advantage.

"One thing that helps a huge amount is just knowing how the game is played. So, that sense of being able to not be too shocked or surprised by what happens, that definitely helps," he said.

"But I think the primary thing that's important is really noticing what it looks like to be convincing. What it is not is sort of overthinking and trying too hard."

There is plenty more Traitors deviousness on the way, with the second season of The Celebrity Traitors coming to BBC One on Thursday 1 October, as 21 famous faces find themselves in the Scottish Highlands taking on the ultimate game of detection, trust and betrayal.
