We still don’t have a release date for The Legend of Vox Machina season 5, which brings an end to the story that brought Critical Role to screens around the world. Despite the uncertainty of when the new (and final) season of the animated series would be coming to Prime Video, Critical Role star and long-time "nerdy ass voice actor" Liam O’Brien assures us that the new season will be just as heartbreaking as the original tabletop campaign.
Radio Times spoke to O’Brien, who plays half-elf Vax’ildan in both the Critical Role live play and in The Legend of Vox Machina, about the status of the new season. While he couldn’t give us an update on when season 5 is coming, he assured us that it starts and finishes strong.
"It’s already breaking our hearts on this side," O’Brien told us just days before he brought Vax back – alongside the rest of Vox Machina – to London MCM and a long-awaited live show at the O2.
"I can’t tell you where in the factory it is, but we’ve seen plenty up and running. It’s beautifully, beautifully written and, I think, a really solid final chapter to our animated adaptation of Vox Machina’s story. I think people are gonna love it."
The story of Vox Machina has always been a mixture of joy and pain, which O’Brien says is part of why it speaks so strongly to people. "No one’s life is sonnets every step of the way. We all stumble and make stupid mistakes in our lives and laugh ourselves silly. We pride ourselves on putting every colour of life into this show… There is a very tragic thread to the story of Vox Machina, but there is so much joy and love and fun and hijinks along the way, and we want all that."
Meanwhile, brand new artwork of Vax’ildan by artist Fred Rambaud was unveiled ahead of the Critical Role takeover of the London O2 on Monday 26 October 2026.
The Legend of Vox Machina Season 5 is coming soon to Prime Video
