A new Italian Job movie is in the works at Paramount, with prolific director Paul Feig reportedly in line to helm the latest entry in the heist franchise.
According to Deadline, Feig – whose best known works include Bridesmaids, A Simple Favour and The Housemaid – is in "early talks" to direct, while the studio is also on the lookout for a writer for the film.
The original The Italian Job was released in 1969, and the comic caper has become a British classic and one of legendary actor Sir Michael Caine's most well-known – and most quoted – roles.
However, it is reported that the new film will be a sequel to the 2003 Hollywood version directed by F Gary Gray and starring Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron, Edward Norton and Jason Statham.
That film was inspired by the original but had a different plot, and became a box office hit – grossing $176 million from a budget of $60 million.
It spurred talk of a sequel at the time, with a follow-up tentatively titled The Brazilian Job having been in development before those plans were scrapped.
There's no word yet on whether any of the cast members from that 2003 film will be reprising their roles in this planned new version, but we'll be on the lookout for any updates.
Feig is already attached to a couple of other upcoming films – with the most notable being a follow-up to The Housemaid – so it will be interesting to see when he might fit this into his schedule.
