The Gentlemen star confirms exit ahead of season 3 episodes: "So that’s a fun sense of closure"

The Gentleman star Daniel Ings has confirmed he will not return for season 3, while also saying that he’s satisfied with his character’s ending.

The Netflix crime drama, which is created by Guy Ritchie, follows an aristocrat (Theo James) who inherits the family estate – only to realise it includes running a business he never imagined being part of.

Speaking to HATC Magazine in a new interview, Ings – who stars as Freddy, the elder brother of Eddie (James) – said: "I'm not in the next one. So that's a fun sense of closure.

"I kind of see it as closure for the character in a way; it just ends as this wild, broken, crazy, you know. I don't know, probably mumbling into the ether somewhere in the British countryside."

The actor went on to add that the evolution of his character came down to Ritchie wanting a more serious tone in season 2.

He said: "It was a lot of fun. Really, it was a great experience. I'll always be grateful to have played a part in creating that character. I absolutely loved playing Freddy. When that storyline was presented to me for series two, he was written almost as a completely different character.

He added: "And part of that was that I think Guy wanted to move away from the humour of it. He sat me down on my first day on the second season and was like, we went too far with the humour; we got to pull it back.

"So that was part of it was really interesting to kind of thread that needle."

The Gentleman was renewed for a third season before the second had even been released.

Upon the news of the renewal, Ritchie said in a statement: "The ambition of The Gentlemen has accelerated, the world has expanded and the consequences carry weight. A third season felt inevitable, and I'm looking forward to pushing the boundaries of it further."

Season 2, which was released last month, introduced fans to a transformed Eddie, who is no longer finding his footing, but rather joining forces with Kaya Scodelario's Susie Glass to expand his criminal empire.

The finale set up more dramatic scenes for Eddie going forward.

The Gentlemen seasons 1 and 2 are available to watch on Netflix. You can sign up to Netflix from £5.99 a month. Netflix is also available on Sky TV and Virgin Media.
