The Celebrity Traitors: episode nine – as it happened

The series has caught fire at last. The final is going to be a scrap and a half. This time tomorrow, we will know the identity of the winner of The Celebrity Traitors. Who could it possibly be? Can Maya do it? Will Kenny slip under the net to secure a victory? If Michael wins, will he become the people's hero?

I would love to hear your theories. Leave them in the comments below, won't you. See you tomorrow, everyone. Oh my god.

And that's where we're going to leave things tonight. Tomorrow just got a lot more exciting, didn't it? Maya Jama, who has spent the entire series gliding through untroubled, will now have to fight for her life to survive. She has a murder to execute, with Kenny, but that can only stop the bleeding for so long.

Everyone leaves for the comfort of their airport hotel, while Maya and Michael Sheen are left alone. The tension is palpable, not least because Sheen decides to take this moment to be very profound and very, very Welsh.

Oh, not that big. Claudia tells everyone that there's going to be a murder. But we knew that already, didn't we.

The remaining contestants go outside and have a nightcap. Something big might be about to happen.

And then Sheen gets even smarter, deploying a kind of dead man's switch by telling everyone that if he is murdered tonight (which he suspects he will be) then everyone should think back to how Maya acted at the roundtable. Whatever happens, she is now firmly suspect number one. Very well played.

The contestants go back into the castle, and Michael Sheen starts crowing about how great he is for seeking out Acaster. And, fuelled by the scent of victory, Romesh and Blunt decide that Maya is probably a traitor too.

I don't know who's counting here, but so far this series two contestants have been banished for declaring themselves to be traitors, and Joe Lycett was banished for declaring that he really wanted to be a traitor. This is the series of hurling yourself on a sword, isn't it?

And that's it. He declares himself a traitor for a second time, and leaves. 'You got one!' shouts Claudia, and everyone cheers, even though he basically killed himself.

Needless to say, everyone votes for James Acaster. Because, well, who wouldn't. It might just be the fastest vote in the entire history of The Traitors.

Right, so, James Acaster has just explained exactly what had happened. He admitted that he was recruited as a traitor, and he didn't want to be a traitor.
