Detroit techno innovator Juan Atkins has died, it has been confirmed.

A stunning voice in electronic music, Juan Atkins remained at the forefront, stretching the definitions of techno in the process.

The sad news was confirmed by his representatives Greensmith in a note to to , which confirmed that he was found unresponsive in his hotel room in Mexico City prior to a planned performance at YuYu Cine Club, and later pronounced dead after being taken to hospital. He was 64 years old.

Clash met Juan Atkins a number of times across a two decade span. In 2019, he told us:

“With anything I do, concept is involved, basically it’s about sound. It’s about vibrations and soundwaves. It’s about the importance of sound and the geometry of sound. I think, sometimes, people don’t realise how important all of that is.”
