Taylor Swift has announced the new single ‘Patient Zero’, which drops later this week – and fans have started speculating whether it marks the start of a new era.
Widespread speculation that Swift had new music on the way sparked yesterday morning (Tuesday September 22), when the pop star changed every “o” in her Instagram bio to a zero, as well as some of the lyrics to her songs on Apple Music and Spotify.
Now, she has announced that she has a new single on the way – ‘Patient Zero’, which will arrive on Friday (September 25).
“I’ve been impatiently waiting to tell you that my brand new single ‘Patient Zero’ will be out on September 25 (!!!!!!!!!!!!) and it’s available to pre-order now on my website for 24 hours,” she wrote in the caption. The post also featured a new photo that shows the pop star in a noticeably different look than she had for her last album, 2025’s ‘The Life Of A Showgirl’.
In contrast to the glittery, elaborate outfits she rolled out with the last album, this post sees the singer in a simple black halter dress and wearing a soft pink lipstick rather than her signature red lip.
The title ‘Patient Zero’ also relates to the term given to the first known person to contract an emerging disease – and some fans are speculating whether it could mark the start of a new era for her, or an extension to her ‘The Life Of A Showgirl’ era.
It is also worth noting that there are 12 exclamation marks in the caption, and Swift’s latest album was her 12th studio release. It isn’t clear whether this is coincidental, or whether it is another Easter egg for fans to unpick.
On Reddit, some are speculating that it could be the start of a new era, while others are thinking it could be an extension to her latest album. Others are convinced that the title of the song could indicate a possible collaboration with Resident Evil.
“Thoughts i have at 5.30am is Taylors new song about the death of dolly and it will be the life of showgirl extra, patient zero, she was an original?” one wrote, while another asked: “Resident Evil soundtrack?” and a third wrote: “When I first heard the title, I had “Resident Evil” / zombie / apocalyptic vibes…”
Someone else chimed in: “Honestly I am totally here for a dark version of ‘Showgirl’, even just an EP of 5-6 songs,” while another wrote: ” have a theory. The new single, ‘Patient Zero’, is an encore but more like a broadway play encore- the red curtains for the countdown on her website is a clue. This explains the stripped down version of ‘Showgirl’ aesthetics.”

Already on the website, there are three versions of the song available to pre-order: the original, an acoustic version, and a piano version, with each featuring different cover photos of Swift.
It will be her first single since she tied the knot with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce in July, and since she dropped ‘I Knew It, I Knew You’, which she wrote for the new film.
As well as swapping some of the ‘O’s for zeroes on her Instagram bio, fans have also noticed that Swift may have hinted at new music during her recent Law and Order SVU-themed sketch at the Emmys last week.
During the skit – in which she worked with Mariska Hargitay to work out ‘If Taylor Swift could appear at the 2026 Emmys’ – fans noticed some cryptic words in the background, which they thought could be an Easter egg for an upcoming announcement: “Saccharide, Aries, From the Vineyard, North or South”.
Others on TikTok also noticed that if you took the third letter from each word, it made an anagram of the word “encore” – potentially signalling that there could be an extension to ‘The Life Of A Showgirl’ on the way.
More about the album is expected to be shared when the single drops on Friday. It seems likely that Swift will make a big announcement about more music soon, given as she has frequently carried out elaborate Easter egg hunts for fans in the past.
She also announced her ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ album at the Grammys in 2024, and is now set to make an appearance at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards this weekend, where she could make another announcement on stage. She will receive the Inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors award this year, and has previously used her time on stage at the event to announce her ‘Midnights’ album.

Swift’s latest album was inspired by her experience on her record-breaking ‘Eras’ tour. It soon became the best-selling album of that year in the UK – making Swift the first artist to have the top seller in consecutive years for different albums since ABBA in 1977.
Since it dropped, Swift has become the youngest female artist to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame, invited Graham Norton, Lewis Capaldi, and Cillian Murphy for her ‘Opalite’ music video, and filed to trademark her own voice and image after growing concerns about AI.
She also donated $26million (£19.5million) to 20 charities across the United States ahead of her wedding at Madison Square Garden, and more recently donated $50,000 (£37,000) to a GoFundMe page to help a mother that was hit by a car.
