Steven Julien Unveils New Album ‘808 Prince’

The 10-track collection is a hardware-led, rhythm-forward escapade. Built entirely around the iconic sonic palette of the Roland TR-808 and TR-1000, the record explores the shared heritage of techno, house, acid house, grime, and electro.

‘808 Prince’ was ushered in with the lead single ‘60SS’ and follow-up ‘LOST’. Under his 808 Prince moniker, ‘LOST’ saw Julien direct his persona firmly into classic house territory – driven by a relentless, infectious groove and anchored by a deep 808 bassline that sits at the intersection of Kerri Chandler’s raw house energy and the anthemic, big-room punch of Daft Punk.

Elsewhere, ‘TTT’ chimes with a sub-oceanic, Drexciya-esque Detroit techno quality and on ‘T2’ and ‘LIME’ Julien ropes in fellow London underground luminaries and J. Caesar for spacious retro-leaning, rap-laced cuts.

Then there’s the focus track ‘DRIVE’, featuring & , a brighter 80s-infused, funk-led anthem rooted in low-end warmth, infectious movement and glazed vocals.

To celebrate the arrival of the LP, Apron Records takes over Radial in North London on today for the official ‘808 PRINCE’ Album Launch Party.

Tune in now.
