Simon Cowell will miss weeks of filming America's Got Talent as he undergoes back surgery.

It has been reported that he will need to sit out for several weeks of the competition show, where he judges alongside Howie Mandel, Sofía Vergara, and Mel B.

A representative for Cowell said (via Entertainment Weekly): "Obviously medical matters are private but it’s routine and he will be back in a few weeks."

Cowell first suffered a back injury in 2020 when he was involved in a bicycle accident.

"Simon has broken his back and will be having surgery this evening," a representative for Cowell told People at the time. "Simon had a fall from his bike on Saturday afternoon whilst testing his new electric bike in the courtyard at his house in Malibu with his family."

They added: "He hurt his back and was taken to the hospital. He's doing fine, he's under observation and is in the best possible hands."

Cowell has spoken about the injury. Appearing on The Kelly Clarkson Show in 2021, he said he was "a millimetre away" from breaking his spine.

He said: "In a weird way, it was kind of meant to happen because I was really pushing my luck. I was buying these crazy, crazy bikes and this particular bike I bought had so much power, I was thrown about eight feet in the air, landed on my back, in front of Eric, by the way.

“I knew I’d broken my back in that second, and somehow managed to get back into my bedroom. I’m lying in my bed, and covered in blood, waiting for the ambulance."
