Serra Marinheiro marks Halloween weekend with "spells in my living room" single

The Canadian-born, London-based artist also worked with Ingram (Laura Marling, Jake Bugg, the Staves) on earlier singles "cataracts", "the way a woman sounds", and "DO WHAT YOU DO TO ME", which launched her new era and left behind POESY, the goth-pop project she debuted back in 2016. "spells in my living room" combines piano singer-songwriter cadences with dark pop textures. Its lyrics use witchy spells and sorcery as a metaphor for the commonplace rituals that people use to get through the day. Marinheiro said: "However heavy, painful, or difficult life gets, I’ve learned how important it is to give those moments their spotlight in their own way."

Marinheiro wrote the song on a day when she felt stuck and powerless to change her life and has said that growing up in a religious community taught her to look for answers outside herself; hence magic and spells and imagination - and teaching her black cat those ways.

She played her first public performance as Serra Marinheiro at SE London Pride this summer. The project is inspired by London Grammar, Florence + The Machine, and Tori Amos, and addresses queer identity, self-empowerment, and creative independence.
