'Secret' Killing Eve prequel series Honey unveils stylish trailer for "tender and flirty" new spy series

A first-look trailer has been unveiled for new new darkly comedic Cold War thriller Honey, which will act as a prequel to Killing Eve.

The series had long been rumoured to explore the backstory of Fiona Shaw's character from that series, Carolyn Martens, following her in 1982 as she is working as a deep cover agent for MI6 and going by the name Martha.

That has now been officially confirmed in the trailer, with Carolyn, played by Ann Skelly, assuming her new identity of Martha Schmitt in East Berlin.

It has also been confirmed when the series will debut, with the thriller arriving on BBC iPlayer and BBC One on Saturday 14 November.

Last year, Shaw told Radio Times that she was "quite excited to see who's going to play me 30 years younger!"

She added: "They told me about it, but you know, that's the awful thing, isn't it? Decades later, you're somebody else. I don't know who that is."

The synopsis for the series, which has been written by Emma Moran, says: "East Berlin, 1982. Martha (pronounced Marta), 24, is a deep cover agent for MI6.

"Surrounded by enemies and constantly under threat of her cover being blown, she tries her hardest to avoid detection by Friedrich, the new Stasi Head of Counter-espionage against British Targets, Berlin Office.

"Finding herself caught between Friedrich and the reckless, arrogant (and incredibly attractive…) CIA operative Aaron Neeland (posing as Kurt Fischer), she is blind-sided by desire in this Cold War ménage à trois.

"The risk of being garrotted or incarcerated is nothing compared to the horrifying ordeal of falling in love. Allowing yourself to be vulnerable and bearing your heart and soul? She'd rather have her fingernails pulled out."
