Rather than a direct adaptation of any of the games, Cregger’s film tells an original story that runs parallel to the events of . “In an all-new story, follows Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier who unwittingly finds himself in an action-packed, non-stop race for survival as one fateful, horrifying night collapses around him in chaos,” reads a description of the “thrilling and terrifying reinvention” of the franchise.
However in the lead up to the film’s release, Cregger had to defend his decision not to adapt one of the game’s storylines. “My only hope is that they’ll see the movie regardless of their skepticism [and] they will recognise all of the love for the games that are in this movie. This is not me just telling a story and slapping on it so I can get a budget. This is me telling a story.”
