Quentin Tarantino's debut play confirmed for West End premiere in 2027 starring UK comedy legend

Quentin Tarantino's debut West End play will be arriving at the Phoenix Theatre in 2027.

While the celebrated filmmaker is no stranger to writing for the screen, having written and directed award-winning films including Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill and Django Unchained, this will be his first foray into writing for the stage.

Taking the lead role is UK comedy star Sacha Baron Cohen, known for his infamous characters like Ali G, Borat Sagdiyev and Brüno Gehard, as well as starring roles in films such as Les Misérables and The Dictator.

As well as being Tarantino's playwriting debut, this will be Baron Cohen's stage acting debut.

The Popinjay Cavalier has been described as "a rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise inspired by the grand swashbuckling epics of stage and screen" and will be set in the 1830s.

Audiences can expect a celebration of both theatre and the swashbuckler genre of old Hollywood, all told with Tarantino's signature wit and style.

The play will be produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, the production company behind some of the biggest shows in the West End including Paddington the Musical and The Book of Mormon.

Ticket prices will begin at £25 and across the run there will be over 16,000 tickets priced below £50.

Speaking about the upcoming production, star Sacha Baron Cohen said: "When the best director in the world calls, you don’t ask questions.

"I am beyond delighted that we will be losing our West End virginity together, I have made him promise not to be gentle."

Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Motion Picture Group Tom Rothman, and Sonia Friedman added: “It is a joy and an honour to be developing this play with Quentin – and obviously quite an adventure. How lucky we are that one of the great storytellers of our time has chosen to make his theatrical debut."
