It's time to bid farewell to the Pogues as the fifth and final season of Outer Banks has now landed on Netflix.
Fans have been waiting patiently to see how things will wrap up in the treasure-hunting YA series – and now those final episodes are available to stream.
Whilst some may be sad to see the back of the series, it's now been revealed that an illuminating prequel series is in the works, which will "set out to explore the origins of Kildare’s deep social divide", with it being set 20 years before the events of the original show.
Outer Banks creator Josh Pate told Deadline: “We’re working on the script. We’re working hard on it with our awesome partners from Netflix, and we’re just trying to get all of it as good as it can be.”
He went on: “It really is the story of how the island split — and it’s particularly relevant in our country right now — how it split into the haves and have-nots, how the Kooks and the Pogues started. How did this rift start?”

Season 5 is the final instalment in the series and at the time of announcing the news, co-creators Shannon Burke, Josh Pate and Jonas Pate said in a joint statement: "Seven years ago, in the summer of 2017, we came across a photo of teenagers on a beach at dusk during a power outage. That photo sparked an idea for a story of four best friends who only want to have a good time all the time.
"From this beginning, we imagined a mystery that would lead to a five-season journey of adventure, treasure hunting, and friendship.
"At the time, seven years ago, it seemed impossible that we would really get to tell the whole five-season story, but here we are at the end of our fourth season, still chopping away."

They continued: "The fourth season was our longest and hardest – but most rewarding – to produce. The season ends with a feature length episode, which we think is our best, most powerful episode. We hope you feel the same way.
"Now, with a little sadness, but also excitement, we're putting season 4 behind us, and are turning to season 5, in which we hope to bring our beloved Pogues home in the way we imagined and planned years ago.
"Season 5 will be our last season, and we think it will be our best yet. We hope you'll join us for one more paddle out to the surf break."
Who stars in ?
As for who will be returning for Outer Banks season 5, the main cast returning for season 5 are as follows:
Season 4 also saw the addition of J Anthony Crane (Dead Ringers) as Chandler Groff, Pollyanna McIntosh (The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live) as Dalia, Brianna Brown (Dynasty) as Hollis Robinson, Rigo Sanchez (Animal Kingdom) as Lightner and Mia Challis (FBI: International) as Ruthie.
Of course, the fourth season of Outer Banks brought a shocking end for JJ (Rudy Pankow), who was stabbed by Groff and left to bleed out and die in Kiara's arms. While some fans thought that there could be the possibility that JJ wasn't dead, Pankow confirmed his Outer Banks exit.
Talking to Netflix, Pankow said: “I want to leave the cast and crew with the biggest thank-you. It’s been such a pleasure to come to work. This is by far the biggest thing I’ve ever done in [my] experience, and to have this as my start is a start of a lifetime. I’m going to miss it. Thank you for so many fun memories I’ll have the rest of my life.”
He continued: “To all the fans that show so much support and love for JJ, I just want to say thank you. It really did make an impact on me, playing him. It’s been an honour to bring him to life for you guys, and it’s been a joy to play him. And P4L!”
What is Outer Banks season 5 about?
The official synopsis for Outer Banks season 5 reads: "Season 5 finds the Pogues at their absolute breaking point following the tragic loss of JJ in Morocco. Stranded far from home and mourning the heart of their crew, they’ve lost the Blue Crown and continue to face a gauntlet of familiar threats.
"With Chandler Groff still at large, Dalia and the Corsairs closing in, and the Kooks ensuring the Pogues have no home to return to, John B, Sarah, Kiara, Pope, and Cleo must rely on their scrappy instincts—and an uneasy alliance with Rafe—to keep from falling apart for good.
"Their mission is now a desperate race to reclaim their future and finally win the freedom they’ve been chasing since the beginning. It’s the Pogues against the world as they seek to avenge their best friend and bring it on home…one final time."
Whilst we now know how things end for Outer Banks (you can read our ending explained for a full breakdown), it may be the case that it wasn't the only ending in the edit.
Jonas Pate previously also told TUDUM: "I like to shoot a dream ending just for me every year that doesn’t make it. You always are trying to come up with that perfect balance that’s surprising but inevitable. And sometimes you’ve just got to mess around with it a little bit."
