If I've learned anything across five seasons of Outer Banks, it's that life ain't easy being a Pogue.

Time and time again, the gang have come close to making their dreams come true, only to lose the treasures they’re hunting at the very last moment.

Last season, the Blue Crown was snatched away from the Pogues. Even worse, they lost one of their own when JJ (Rudy Pankow) was killed by his father, Chandler Groff (J Anthony Crane).

In the fifth and final season, the Pogues have one last shot at securing their happy ending and honouring the memory of their fallen friend. But do they manage it? They’re a scrappy bunch, but the odds are certainly stacked against them.

Reflecting on the Netflix hit’s final instalment, co-creator Josh Pate expressed his gratitude that the show was able to end on its own terms. He told Deadline: "We feel really a lot of gratitude to being allowed to end the show in the way we wanted to. A lot of gratitude to Netflix, to Ted [Sarandos] and Bela [Bajaria] and Nne [Ebong], who believed in the show from the beginning, and they largely let us tell the story that we wanted to.

"So, you’ve been around Hollywood long enough to know that you rarely get to end on your own terms. So, we feel a lot of gratitude for that."

That gratitude was echoed by an emotional goodbye from the cast. Madelyn Cline described herself as "emotional soup", while Drew Starkey recalled just how difficult it was to film his final scenes as Rafe Cameron.

Speaking to Netflix Tudum, Starkey said: "I was a wreck. I really was. I didn't think I would be... I was like, ‘Don’t let it end. Don’t let it end. Don’t let it end.’

“I had to take a moment. I walked about 20 yards away from everyone and just started weeping. I felt it all — the finality,” he says. “It felt like grief. I’d been with this person, Rafe Cameron, for the past seven years, and I was like, ‘That’s the last time I’ll get to play him, pretend to be him, and embody him.’”

Stokes, meanwhile, focused on the importance of bringing the story to a natural conclusion. Speaking to HELLO!, he said: "We've watched so many great shows have such long runs, and you kind of get tired and over the world of it, because it just gets messy and sloppy, and I think we're right on the cusp of that," he adds.

"So, I'm really proud of the fact that we are able to tell the entirety of the story and end it on the right note versus going a little bit longer than we should have, and I think, for me, being able to hang up the bandana and let him finally take a nap is very rewarding, in the right ways."

In the penultimate episode of season five, the Pogues lost the Blue Crown . Because of course they did. Kie (Madison Bailey) found some catharsis, however, when she used the crown to summon JJ for one last goodbye.

Did Kie really see the love of her life or was it just the memory of him?

That's kept deliberately vague, but what we do know is that the Pogues are now back home, free, but penniless with no new jobs to speak of either.

That's the last thing on their minds though when a hurricane hits the island and Groff suddenly shows up again.

What happens to Rafe and Sofia?

While everyone else tries to evacuate the island, Rafe (Drew Starkey) heads to jail so he can rescue Sofia (Fiona Palomo).

Using the chaos of the hurricane as a distraction, Rafe knocks out the cop guarding Sofia's cell. But the guy soon wakes up and gives chase, shooting at them until the storm forces a tree to fall down, pinning him to the ground. That hurricane got real handy all of a sudden.

Rafe wants to leave the cop behind to die because they're now scot-free, but Sofia persuades him to go back.

The cop is still mad, pointing out that Rafe killed his friend, Sheriff Susan Peterkin (Adina Porter), all the way back at the end of season one. Rafe apologises and says that he'll never have to see his face again after tonight.

And with that, they help the cop get free before running off to the lighthouse where all the Pogues gather to seek refuge from the storm.

Along the way, the Pogues also save Pope (Jonathan Daviss) and his dad who they miraculously find drifting on a wreckage in the ocean.

Maybe they're not as unlucky as they like to make out.

Does Kie get revenge against Groff?

Groff, possibly the jammiest killer alive, manages to steal some gold that once belonged to the Pogues and makes it off the island on a hijacked boat.

Kie is in quick pursuit, however, stowing away on that same boat to exact her revenge.

Out on the ocean, Kie jumps him, but Groff knocks her off before she can stab him with her knife. The pair face off and Kie asks him why he did it. Why did Groff kill his son, JJ?

He doesn't really explain all that much, preferring instead to get the jump on Kie again. But just when it looks like he's about to kill her with a knife of his own, Kie manages to reel Groff up with a rope that got caught around his body.

Hoisted above the boat as the storm rages all around, Groff is pulled above the water where Kie cuts the rope, dropping him into the ocean. The weight of the sail beam that he's tied to drags him to the ocean floor.

Yep, Groff is dead at last. Kie got her revenge against the man who killed her boyfriend.

Things aren't looking great though when the ship starts to sink. Kie manages to radio out for help just in time before she's knocked overboard.

The Pogues picked up her distress signal because of course they did, but they still can't find Kie, not until she sends a flare up into the eye of the storm.

"Help me, JJ," says Kie, because this show is nothing if not cheesy.

And of course, that's when the Pogues show up to save her.

Together, they all make it back to the lighthouse in one piece.

What happened to the gold?

In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandra, the island lost power for weeks.

All the Pogues survived, says John B (Chase Stokes), "but the island changed forever." It took months to even begin to recover, but before all that, the gang have to say goodbye to Rafe.

He and Sofia are now wanted fugitives, so they secure a getaway boat and head to South America.

"I’m sorry for everything that happened," Rafe tells his sister Sarah (Madelyn Cline). "I really am, but I don’t think I’ll be able to come back again so I won’t see your baby. I got a second chance and I need to make it count."

On the plus side, the Pogues now have the whole island to themselves because everyone else evacuated. And so begins their search for the gold that Groff took out to sea.

Every day, they search until they finally find it, reclaiming the gold they lost two years ago to build their lives anew.

Lucky buggers.

How does Outer Banks end?

John B says "Once you have access to 400 million in gold, it's easy to sort out visa issues," so the Pogues do exactly that, bringing Pope's girlfriend Cleo (Carlacia Grant) back to the island.

Wait, make that "fiance", because Pope proposes and she says yes!

The hurricane didn't just make the Pogues richer though. It also exposed the laws that real estate developer Dale Zeasy (Jason Davis) broke when he took over the island. Good timing, right?

Kie becomes a marine biologist intern, dedicating the name of her new boat to JJ. She really can't let that boy go, huh.

Sarah gives birth to her and John B's baby before we then jump ahead a year to a big party they're holding for their nuptials.

"All the things we’ve gone through," says John B, "all the time spent searching, all the hardships, all the mistakes and the one big loss… Maybe it didn’t make it worth it, but finally, for once, we got a win. Us. The Pogues. One win. We weren’t greedy, it was enough for us."

"One win," he adds. "That was enough to last us our whole lives."

It's then that Sarah and John B tie the knot, just as we find out that they named their baby after JJ.

And then, one final monologue from John B as the Pogues enjoy their happy ending at last.

"We are the Pogues. Our mission for life is to have a good time all the time. We went around the world looking for treasure, but in the end, we found everything we wanted right where we started. The Outer Banks. Paradise on earth."

Cheesy? Sure. But as happy endings go, it's a good one.
