An Outer Banks prequel series is reportedly in the works at Netflix.
The fifth and final season of the show, which will see the likes of Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey and Jonathan Daviss reprising their roles, is set to premiere on the streamer on 20 August.
And according to Deadline, that won't be the last fans get to see of the island, as a prequel series set 20 years before the events of the current series is being developed by franchise co-creators Josh Pate, Jonas Pate and Shannon Burke.
The publication reports that the new show will explore the origins of the social divide between the Pogues, who represent the working class, and the wealthy Kooks, which has driven the show's main storylines in the current series.
The outlet adds that, while the prequel has been in the works for years, it has only just entered formal development now that the mothership series is coming to an end.
"We’re working on the script," Josh Pate told the outlet in a separate interview, adding: "We’re working hard on it with our awesome partners from Netflix, and we’re just trying to get all of it as good as it can be."
Pate also told the publication that the prequel will revolve around entirely new characters as well as some of the characters that viewers have met before, such as the parents of the current series' cast.
This could include the parents of JJ (Pankow), Sarah and Rafe (Starkey), Pope (Daviss), Kiara (Madison Bailey), and Topper (Austin North), who have all featured in the series so far.
Alongside Stokes, Cline, Bailey and Daviss, Outer Banks season 5 will also see the returns of Carlacia Grant, Drew Starkey, J Anthony Crane, Austin North, Fiona Palomo and Cullen Moss.
The synopsis for the new instalment says that it "finds the Pogues at their absolute breaking point following the tragic loss of JJ in Morocco".
