Olivia Rodrigo shares “hard line” stance on using AI in music

Olivia Rodrigo has shared her firm stance on using AI in her music, saying she would “never” incorporate the technology into her work.

The pop star discussed the controversial topic in a new interview with , where she was asked directly whether she would ever use it during the creative process.

“I would never use AI in any of my music,” Rodrigo responded. “Absolutely no. Hard line on that.”

She did reveal that she and long-time producer Dan Nigro had played around with ideas once, explaining: “The closest I’d ever got is that once, me and Dan were like, ‘God, I wonder what ideas ChatGPT would have for an Olivia Rodrigo title.’ And they’re all fucking awful.”

Her comments come as debate around AI continues to intensify across the music industry.

Last month, Suno admitted using audio obtained from YouTube to train its AI models, amid a wider legal battle over whether copyrighted material can be used to train generative technology.

Artists including Jason Isbell have also filed a lawsuit against Suno, alleging that the platform generates music designed to evoke specific musicians’ identities and styles without their consent.

Elsewhere, Dr. Dre recently said he was “embracing” AI in music, comparing resistance to the technology with the initial scepticism that greeted drum machines and synthesisers.

Rodrigo’s comments arrive during a busy period for the singer following the release of her third album, ‘You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love’, in June.

The record earned four-and-a-half stars from , which called it a “bittersweet, cinematic odyssey from a generational talent”.

“Here is a major popstar who is not afraid to get weirder and more wonderful, to give even more of themselves over in their art,” the review read. “‘You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love’ is undeniable evidence of Rodrigo’s growth: as a songwriter, composer, and as a human being.”

She also recently kicked off her huge ‘Unraveled Tour’, which includes an extended run of shows at London’s The O2 next spring. See all of the dates here and find any remaining tickets here.

In August, Rodrigo staged the inaugural Daisy Chain Fields in California, an all-women festival that raised millions for organisations supporting women and girls and featured performances from Chappell Roan, Doechii, Bikini Kill and Garbage.

gave the festival a four-and-a-half star review, celebrating it as “a beautiful, empowering triumph”.
