Marson said the Christina character stands in for anyone who briefly passes through our lives, such as the person who tried to kiss him when he was on tour in Prague a few years back. "Christina" bottles the "bittersweet weight of moments that are over before you can fully hold onto them," his press statement read. "The track is ultimately about that deep sense of longing and nostalgia for good times that have already slipped away."

Marson wanted Van Etten to be the voice of Christina after her Primavera Sound set left him in tears, and reached out via an Instagram DM. He has also collaborated with Jessica Winter, Jorge Elbrecht, and Millie Turner, with more collabs due soon on an as yet unannounced full-length release.

The track was co-produced by Joshua Rumble, who has worked on Marson's previous releases, as well as on projects by Black Country, New Road, Bastille, Gang Of Four, and others. Charles Cave of White Lies plays fretless bass. The single follows his EP from November last year and the 2023 debut full-length Why Did I Choose This?.
