Beyond its allegorical title, ‘Payback Is A Dog’ is a deeply relatable concept project that every listener will empathise with. “It’s about growing in and out of love with people, friends, situations and certain environments you find yourself in,” she explains.

Whether reflecting on friendships, relationships or her own personal growth, Smith explores the often uncomfortable reality of moving beyond the people and places that once felt familiar. “It’s such a universal feeling to outgrow people, outgrow friends and environments,” she says. “I always want music to touch people in a way that they can relate to. That was my intention.”

And that communal reach is why Smith’s live performances have become such meaningful spaces for respite and connection. “It’s so nice to see people’s reactions and how it makes them feel at that moment,” she shares. “I’ve seen people cry, I’ve seen people vibing, I’ve seen it all. It’s really nice to see different reactions and how the songs take on their own life and bring their own meaning.”
