Acclaimed political drama The Diplomat is back, with season 4 set to pick up after a dramatic cliffhanger, which saw Kate and Todd start to question just how close their husband and wife - the president and vice president - were becoming.
The new season has been described as a portrait of the two marriages, meaning Keri Russell, Rufus Sewell, Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford will all be front and centre for the new episodes.
Meanwhile, Rory Kinnear will also be back as Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge, with the rest of the supporting cast also set to return.
The synopsis for season 4 says: "One catastrophic moment shatters the fragile peace Kate Wyler brokered between the US and UK, as well as the crumbling marriage she’s trying to save. While she fights to stem the bleeding, President Grace Penn and VP Hal Wyler’s conspiracy to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon hurtles the United States toward war.
"Kate and Todd, at best an uneasy pair, unite to stop the Grace-Hal alliance from upending the balance of power abroad and at home."

Keri Russell plays Kate Wyler
Who is Kate Wyler? Kate is a US diplomat who has built a career working in war zones and was due to be sent to Afghanistan. However, at the last moment she was told that she would instead become to the ambassador to the UK, a role she had serious reservations about. Over the show's first two seasons she was seen as a potential candidate to take over as vice president from Grace Penn, but after President Rayburn's death, Grace became president and made Hal her Vice President.

Rufus Sewell plays Hal Wyler
Who is Hal Wyler? Hal is Kate's husband and the new Vice President of the United States. He had a career as a top US diplomat and a political heavyweight, and is known to be successful yet manipulative and ruthless. He had been trying to position Kate to be the next vice president before getting the role himself.

Ato Essandoh plays Stuart Heyford
Who is Stuart Heyford? Stuart is Kate's right hand man and her deputy chief of mission at the US Embassy in London.

Who is Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge? Nicol Trowbridge is the hawkish, volatile Conservative Prime Minister of the UK. Kate at one point believed he may have been behind an attack of his own people on board the HMS Courageous, but it later became clear he was unaware of the plot and Margaret Roylin's involvement.
Where have I seen Rory Kinnear? Kinnear is a prolific film and TV actor, perhaps best-known for his roles as Bill Tanner in the James Bond film series.

Who is Todd Penn? Todd is Grace Penn's husband, and the first gentleman of the United States.

Who is Grace Penn? Grace is the new president of the USA, after Rayburn's death. She knows that Kate was vying to take over her job and instead appointed her husband, Hal. She was also behind the plot to bomb the HMS Courageous.

In season 2 it became known that she had worked with Grace Penn and others on a secret plot to bomb the HMC Courageous, as a way of keeping the union together. At the start of season 3, she took her own life.
