Matt Carmichael’s ‘Held In The Dark’ Is A Powerful Jazz Statement

Scottish saxophonist has shared his moving new album ‘Held In The Dark’ in full.

Out now, it follows a spell away from the spotlight, with Matt Carmichael spending time caring for a loved on.

Those experiences – and more – fuel his new album, with ‘Held In The Dark’ relishing the power of personal communion.

Working with some close friends – such as long-standing collaborators Charlie Stewart (fiddle), Fergus McCreadie (piano), Ali Watson (bass) and Stephen Henderson (drums) – sessions saw Matt embrace nests of guitar sounds supplied by Chris Amer and James Mackay.

The songs themselves hang together well – ruminations on landscapes (‘Morning Geese’ and ‘Red Sky’ for example) are merged with the spiritual (‘Prayer’) to produce something genuinely beatific.

Tune in now.
