Marvel star Chloe Bennet shares the frustration of Agents of SHIELD fans that the long-running series is effectively no longer recognised as canon to the wider MCU.

The series began in 2013, resurrecting Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) from his apparent death in the first Avengers movie, and putting him in charge of a fragile new team.

The first season drew a mixed reception from critics, but reviews greatly improved from season 2 onwards as the show shifted from a procedural format to serialised long-form stories.

Tangible links to the MCU movies also fell away over the course of the run, ending with early guest spots from Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson), Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), Lady Sif (Jaimie Alexander) and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell).

Concerns have been fuelled by various continuity headaches, such as the Darkhold in WandaVision bearing no resemblance to that which was depicted in Agents of SHIELD season 4.

Meanwhile, there is much doubt that Ryan Gosling's upcoming Ghost Rider will make any nod to Agents of SHIELD's holder of that mantle, Robbie Reyes (played by The Last of Us star Gabriel Luna).

Bennet starred as Daisy Johnson (aka Quake) in the series across all seven seasons; a notable character from the comics with deep ties to SHIELD, and a powerful hero in her own right.

Agents of SHIELD fans have hoped for her to be reintegrated into the MCU, in the style of Charlie Cox's Daredevil, but rumours and speculation have repeatedly come to nothing.

For her part, Bennet has told Elle that she's still "obsessed with Daisy" and would reprise the role if asked, but admitted to being "angry" at how Agents of SHIELD is ignored by Marvel Studios.

"I'm still low-key angry that they don't fully acknowledge this as canon — the real followers will understand that," she began.

"We were the first MCU TV show, and we did 130-something hour-long episodes. We spent a lot of time in people's homes, and I spent a lot of my life playing this character and this young woman growing into her power."

Bennet added: "There's a lot of symbolism in that, especially looking back now. I would love to play her with the growth that I've had since I've had a break from the role."

Initially introduced under the pseudonym 'Skye', Bennet's character was later revealed to be Daisy Johnson; an Inhuman with the ability to generate earthquake-level vibrations, channelled through gauntlets on her wrists.

The finale of Agents of SHIELD hinted that she could graduate to space-focused intelligence agency SWORD, later referenced in WandaVision. For now, we can only hope and speculate whether that plot thread will be picked up.

Since the show wrapped up, Bennet has starred in high-concept Hulu comedy-drama Interior Chinatown, and taken roles in A Very Jonas Christmas Movie and Prime Video's Invincible.

Coming up, she has a mystery recurring role in The White Lotus season 4.

Bennet's sentiment is echoed in a recent appearance by her Agents of SHIELD co-star Ming-Na Wen (Agent Melinda May) on a podcast hosted by The Mandalorian and Battlestar Galactica actor Katee Sackhoff.

"Agents of SHIELD sort of became a separate entity for whatever reason, because it was on the network as opposed to streaming" recalled Wen.

"I don't understand it... I just know that there's some sort of division," continued Wen. "We were the first, so you would think we should get some accolade for helping to establish [the MCU in TV]."

Wen, who is also the original voice of Mulan and plays Fennec Shand in the Star Wars franchise, disclosed that she has not been approached to reprise the role of May since Agents of SHIELD ended.
