Marina Herlop Releases New Album ‘Dja Dja’

Catalan artist has unveiled her new album, ‘Dja Dja’.

Ushered in with the singles ‘Jaque’, ‘Vas volant’ and ‘Bliss’, ‘Dja Dja’ represents a strikingly disciplined and sprawling feat from the classically trained, avant-garde luminary.

Moving between delicate piano and flute collages to epic, inter-dimensional compositions – with sibilant and harmonic vocal work guiding the piece throughout – Herlop has crafted a work that is immersive as it is confounding.

Herlop conceived the album as a single, unbroken body of work, where the whole coheres even as each piece retains its own internal mechanics. The album’s original foundation was the archetypal Hero’s Journey. Adapting this origin, Herlop is guided by an open intent to reconceive the myth and empower the listener, with every interpretation just as true as her own.

Reflective of her Catalonian roots, yet often evoking a fantastical space entirely of her own creation, the music brings to mind artists like Fever Ray, Björk, and Diamanda Galas, as well as composers like Michael Nyman and Steve Reich.

‘Dja Dja’ follows the piano-led minimalism of her first two albums ‘Nanook’ and ‘Babasha, and the electronic radicalism of her next records ‘Pripyat’ and ‘Nekkuja’ – two milestone works released on PAN.

Tune in now.
