Well, we certainly weren't anticipating that.
After a three-year wait, Lupin has returned to Netflix for part 4 with an eventful first episode which sees Assane Diop's world turned upside when a copycat Lupin frames him for a double heist.
But while he wasn't remotely prepared for that development, which forces him to reluctantly escape from prison to prove his innocence, the biggest shock is still waiting for him.
In a shocking twist, Claire and Ben are in a relationship.
"How's the catalogue?" Assane's ex asks his best friend, who is working on his laptop. She places her hands on his shoulders and leans forward to take a look at his work, as he tells her that's he's "Almost done".
The pair then then look at one another and share a kiss as an uneasy score creeps in.
"Do you think he's jealous?" asks Ben, responding to J'accuse, who barks several times before growling.
"Oh, he'll come around eventually," says Claire, breezily.
But they could just as easily be talking about Assane, who has no idea the mother of his child and his closest confidante are now an item.

"We wanted some changes," said Omar Sy of their relationship, which is less unexpected the more you think about it. Not only have they known one another for a very long time, they have both been put through the wringer by Assane and the circus around him. So naturally, they have developed a deep and unique bond.
"Also, we wanted to be a little bit realistic. Assane is always winning, you know. But he's made some bad decision in his life and it would have been weird for him to not experience the consequences of his choices – so this is one of them."

"He betrayed Benjamin," added Sy, referring to Assane's decision to orchestrate the arrest of Benjamin so that he could save his mother, who had been kidnapped.
But Assane hadn't Ben what he was planning during that particuar heists, so even though he turned himself in to save his friend, it didn't take away form the fact that he had betrayed him.
"So we wanted to challenge Assane in a different way," continued Sy. "Things cannot be so easy for you all the time," said Sy.
When asked how Assane will react to this latest bombshell (ahead of the episodes being made available for review), Sy laughed.
"You'll watch it."
