Live Report: Portola Music Festival 2026

From September 26th to 27th, is the optimal festival site for music discovery and worship. Past years of the festival have proven that point and 2026 continued that legacy and pushed it forward for its fifth edition. Every year for the past four years, Portola lands in San Francisco and has become a fixture in the underground electronic music community — reinforcing the voices of global artists and DJs with niche but ruthlessly zealous fanbases. Dance music has reigned over Portola and many attendees travel to the music festival to listen to just that, but this year pop singers, , , and were all welcomed into the unique scene and landed in the industrial shipyard port where the festival takes place with a splash.

One of the most elaborate aspects of the Goldenvoice-produced Portola Music Festival are the stages. The Pier Stage is the centre destination where you can catch headlining acts. The Warehouse arena is an enclosed industrial space that feels as if you are partying in Berghain. Crane stage is open-air and feels expansive, while The Ship tent canopies festival-goers in a club atmosphere for performing electronic artists on the lineup. Every music enthusiast’s preferred space is the newer Despacio experience. (on the lineup this year), , collaborated together to create this legendary venue. Seven giant McIntosh Labs’ custom speakers surround concertgoers while a giant disco ball spins above you. What I loved most about this space is that the DJ is nowhere to be found which allows for attendees to really be present with their friends and let go by allowing their bodies to react to the music.

On the first day, indie-dance band returned to Portola. At the Pier Stage, the New York-based collective who are building a cult following after the release of their latest album, Ö, shut down Portola with an afternoon set. Their crowd was massive and you could feel the magnitude of their setlist as young festivalgoers pounded the pavement with the soles of their shoes. When the sun went down and the moon rose into the nightsky, UK pioneer led the Crane stage on Pier 80. Running through his 97’ dance hits from ‘You’ve Come A Long Way Baby’, Norman Quentin Cook at 63-years-old erupted with joy playing signature hit, ‘Praise You’. Belgian duo transformed the same stage into an electro-punk spectacle directly after Fatboy Slim warmed up the audience. and reunited as to close out day one of Portola with a cranked up set.

Afterparties are a major feature of the Portola Music Festival. If you missed a specific artist on the docket, they’re most likely performing at a local venue in San Francisco. The Regency Ballroom, Public Works, Pier 80 Warehouse, Great Northern, 888 Garage, and so many other intimate spaces south of Market street become premiere nightclub destinations for those who want to dance all-night. Goldenvoice brings the culture of eastern European festivals to San Francisco, a city known for being extremely liberal and experimental — creating a perfect alchemy of dance and unwavering spirit.

Day 2 of Portola ushered in many international acts. from São Paulo, Brazil invigorated returning festivalgoers at the Pier Stage with Baile funk and underground favela dance music. All the way from Argentina, remixed Spanish classics with fast-paced BPMs to get us sweating. Electronic princess arrived to the Crane stage with feverish energy, spinning anthemic party tracks like ‘that’s my beach’ and ‘eat, sleep, slay’. Swedish superstar brought performance spectacle to the fore with her ‘Midnight Sun’ hits. She brought out and together they revelled in the banner year Larsson has cultivated for herself as a tenured pop singer. EDM giants and cerebral electronic maven delivered an explosive audio-visual finale at Portola, making it known why they are trailblazers of their own right.
