Liam Gallagher has hit out at Liverpool, claiming that it was Oasis who helped put The Beatles “back on the map”.
The Oasis frontman has been at odds with Liverpool FC supporters for days now on Twitter/X, following his beloved Manchester City being found guilty by the Premier League of 114 out of 115 charges accusing the team of serious breaches of financial rules. The club are now appealing the verdict.
Following the huge response to the charges from the football world, Liam spoke out in defence of the team on the social media platform – accusing other huge teams including Liverpool and Arsenal of being “corrupt”.
“All this hatred directed at Man City from other clubs should be directed at Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool,” he wrote last week. “They’re the ones who are corrupt and trying to stop other teams from winning things, not Man City. We’re trying to help you all out, we’re like Jesus prepared to die on the cross.”

Unsurprisingly the tweet sparked a big response, and now the Britpop icon has doubled down on the comments, and taken a swipe at The Beatles and the city of Liverpool along the way.
“All these Scousers giving me and my band shit, Oasis have done more for the city of Liverpool than they will ever do,” he claimed in a recent tweet.
“Oasis put the Beatles back on the map which they no doubt directly profit from, ungrateful little sods,” he added, before singing off with “MCFC” and his usual signature “LG x”.

It goes without saying that the comments quickly sparked backlash from other users, with many rushing to defend The Beatles’ legacy and argue that their impact on the music industry was bigger than Gallagher suggested.
“’Oasis put The Beatles back on the map’? The sheer arrogance! Pretty sure their legacy doesn’t need a boost from the Gallagher brothers,” one person wrote, while another shared: “TBF Liam if it wasn’t for the Beatles you’d be working in Home Bargains.”
“Just for the record the Spice Girls cracked America harder than Oasis ever did… Let that sink in before you start putting yourselves in the same [fucking] sentence as The Beatles,” a third person quipped, while Portishead and Beak> star Geoff Barrow also came to The Beatles’ defence.
“Think Liam’s been on the ciders. The Beatles were everything you aren’t: Groundbreaking, respected, original, modest, artistic, political, respectful, cultured, globally revered, creative, experimental, funny and charming,” he wrote, before adding: “Where as you copied Status Quo. Wind your neck in.”
"Oasis put The Beatles back on the map"? The sheer arrogance! Pretty sure their legacy doesn't need a boost from the Gallagher brothers. The closest Oasis will ever get to the Fab Four is when Noel sang on The Chemical Brothers' Setting Sun and Let Forever Be.

Oasis have done nothing for this city compared to what the Beatles have done, what a weird post.

They were never off the map. And I say that as no real fan of the Beatles.

While most were quick to call out Liam for the comments, a few others were more open to his claims, with one writing: “I think there is some truth to it. Oasis introduced many people to the Beatles just by talking about them.”
Someone else chimed in: “They did though. Introduced a lot of young ‘uns to The Beatles, myself included. Before Oasis I only knew a couple of the Beatles’ hits like ‘I Wanna Hold Your Hand’, etc. After Oasis I started buying Beatles albums.”

The Beatles were seen as uncool late 70's and through the 80's. You could argue that their rehabilitation came when the Britpop acts in the mid-1990s openly cited them, and the 1995 Anthology project put the catalogue and the surviving members back in front of a new audience.
Reports that the commission hearing the long-running case had ruled against City on all but one of the alleged breaches emerged at the end of September. No punishment has yet been decided for the club, who maintain their innocence and have appealed.
At the time, Liam took to X and responded to journalist Ben Jacobs who reported the news of the guilty verdict for 114 out of 115 of the charges. “Get your OASIS tickets bought and stop talking out your fucking arse you SPUNKBUBBLE,” he wrote.
Noel Gallagher also spoke out following the news, making an appearance on the Manchester City podcast , and admitting he was taken aback after years of assurances from the club that they had done nothing wrong.
He described hearing the verdict as “a bit of a shock”, adding that he felt “sad for the fans and for the players”.
When asked whether the ruling changed how he viewed iconic moments in the club’s recent history – including Sergio Agüero’s last-gasp goal that secured the 2011/12 Premier League title – Noel said supporters could only judge what they had witnessed on the pitch. “Does it taint it? I suppose in the eyes of everybody else in England it would,” he said. “But I know what I saw and I know what I felt.”
Should the reported findings survive City’s appeal, the punishments available range from fines and points deductions through to expulsion from the Premier League.

Liam and Noel Gallagher have followed City for decades, and recent headlines have included them celebrating together at Wembley after City beat Arsenal 2-0 to win the Carabao Cup.
Noel’s ties to the club also extend beyond the stands, with him designing the font used on City’s 2024/25 cup kits and collaborating with the club on a ‘Definitely Maybe’-inspired ‘Definitely City’ collection in the past.
Next year, the band are set to head out on their ‘Live ’27’ tour, which includes 11 shows at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium over the summer.
