Katie Gregson-MacLeod – Albatross

‘Albatross’ finds riffing on the theme of a simultaneous blessing and curse.‘196’ is melancholy with almost monotone verses lifting into major key choruses. It’s a gateway into ‘Nothing Really Changes’, a counter-intuitive hope-filled song, resting on a classic progression with firm drums, evoking a golden-hued Scottish Highlands variation on country. There’s a similar atmosphere on ‘Roadkill’, where the shimmering sound belies the hard-hitting theme. Performed with disarming honesty, the result is a bold, timeless, starkly beautiful debut.
