Joy Oladokun’s Enthralling London Live Show – Captured In Illustrations

is a truly singular artist. Take recent album ‘Hope Is A Heavy Thing’ – intense in places and joyous in others, it’s a remarkable listen, a gripping, entertaining song cycle.

Built in “the back of a speeding tour bus”, the record was produced between Nashville and New York, and it is driven forwards by flames of revelatory wisdom, with Joy advising that “to understand your future you have to confront your past…”

Touching down in London last week, Joy played an intimate show at Ellen’s, part of Camden’s KOKO venue.

An enormously special show, asked for no phones in the audience – but there was a twist.

Illustrator Jika Edström did these beautiful drawing on the evening, a real-time encapsulation of the show.

Joy comments…

“my favourite way to celebrate an album release is with a solo acoustic show. most songs i write start in this form, so it’s always feels like sharing the music in its purest form. this night in London,  we huddled up in a members only club lined with velvet couches and smiling faces. there were no photos allowed but these drawings by Jika Edström were a beautiful way to capture the moment. it was good to be with my people for a night and i can’t wait to come back soon.”

Catch at London’s Roundhouse on April 10th, part of the Roundhouse 360 Festival.
