“I was like, it’s End of the Road and this is a great opportunity to play Michael Hurley’s song ‘The End of the Road’. It would be perfect,” Lewis said while introducing the final song of his four-song secret set. “But then I noticed Yo La Tengo already did that exact same thing on the same stage. They think of all the great ideas first. So that just leaves me with this option,” he continued before offering a rendition of the 1991 tune by the American R&B group.

He added an ironic spoken-word break to the song, in which he said, “End of the Road, I love you even though you haven’t booked my band in ten years. I wish you’d think of Jeffrey Lewis & the Voltage every once in a while... cos I still think of you.”

Lewis last played End of the Road a few minutes earlier, a full-band set on the Woods stage. Before that, though, it was back 2016, hence his playful chiding of the bookers.

Lewis, who was born in New York City, has released dozens of albums of bitingly witty, plainspoken folk, and is often associated with that city’s 'anti-folk' movement, including acts such as The Moldy Peaches.

The setlist was rounded out by new and unreleased tracks: “What the Living Hell is Up with Me and Sex?”, “Just Fun”, and a revisionist history satire in which the bullet only hits Malcolm X’s ear while Donald Trump’s genitals get mangled.
