I Love Boosters stars detail chaotic filming sequence: "It was the most insane day"

For UK cinephiles, it's been a long time coming for I Love Boosters to make its way to cinemas — but this weekend, they're finally in luck.

In Boots Riley's sophomore film, audiences are thrust into world of boosting, in which Corvette (Keke Palmer) cooks up a scheme where she and her crew loot upmarket department stores, and redistribute the clothes to the masses for a cheaper price.

Their scheme quickly grows bigger and bigger as they plan to clear out all of the Metro Designer stores across the Bay Area, but they're beaten to it by Jianhu (Poppy Liu), who arrives from a factory in China, where the Metro Designer clothes are made.

Soon, "their mission goes from a local thing to a global thing," Riley said. "It's all connected all part of one thing. The fight that they're in becomes bigger."

Keke Palmer wearing a yellow wig and outfit, holding a piece of fabric to her face as she looks to one side.

Jiahnu, Corvette, Sade (Naomi Ackie) and Mariah (Taylour Paige) then join forces and find a far quicker way to clear out the stores, but they are in need of of disguises.

In one particular sequence, the women undergo a chaotic makeover, including new wigs, make-up and outfits, and it was no easy day on set either.

Poppy Liu told Radio Times: "The montage day was the craziest because we did all of those. It was outfit change, hair, make-up change, full change, change, change, change, change. And we had to do a photo shoot. And a photo shoot."

While the sequence wasn't filmed in chronological order, a large chunk of it was filmed in one day, with Ackie explaining: "We did about five looks, and I think that we had tried to do more than we could for the day. But it was the most insane, long day...

"...Wig off, new wig on. New make-up, new costume. Flowers on your face. Flowers, yeah. Like, Keke has like surrealist face flowers. A face full of flowers. I think that was the most hectic."

"The overarching theme was that anything goes, we could really play with extreme looks but also extremely mundane looks," costume designer Shirley Kurata said. "Because the script was so maximalist, I felt like it was important to also go there with some of the disguises they were wearing and really have fun with it."

"It was kind of like designing for a character with multiple personalities, which made for a very fun and interesting challenge," she added.

I Love Boosters will be released in UK cinemas on Friday 30 October.
