How to get Epona in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time explained

You can only ride Epona when you’re Adult Link, but getting the legendary horse is a quest that starts when you are Young Link.

The first step is to learn Epona’s song from Malon as Young Link. To do this you must head to Lon Lon Ranch in Hyrule Fields during the middle of the day.

Next, go to where the horses are to find Malon singing next to Epona. Talk to her to learn about her song that soothes the ranch animals.

Once you’re done speaking to Malon, pull out your ocarina whilst standing next to her to prompt Malon to teach you Epona’s song.

That’s all the steps required for Young Link, so for now progress through the story until you get the Master Sword and become Adult Link. As Adult Link, return to Lon Lon Ranch to find out that Talon is missing, and Malon is now working in the stables under the bratty Ingo since Ganondorf took over.

Instead of talking to Malon, you now have to speak to Ingo to get Epona. Pay him 20 rupees to ride one of the horses, but once inside the ranch, take out your ocarina and play Epona’s song.

Epona will gallop over to you – climb onto her and ride around the ranch. Practice riding and jumping over fences before speaking to Ingo on the back of Epona, which will trigger him to challenge Link to a race for 20 rupees.

Accept Ingo’s challenge, beat him and he will throw and tantrum and ask for another round – if you beat him once more, Epona is all yours.

In the second race, Ingo is harder to beat as the stakes are raised – he will cheat and be a lot faster than before. If you beat him again, he will throw a tantrum once more and lock the gates.

Here, charge at the gate directly with speed, ignoring Ingo and triggering a cutscene as you gallop off with Epona.

And that’s all there is to it! You can play Epona’s song any time in Hyrule Field to summon your trusty stead by your side.
