Goya Gumbani Shares New EP ‘Bean Pie’

Brooklyn-born, Southeast London artist Goya Gumbani has shared his new EP ‘Bean Pie’, out via Ghostly International.

The transitional project follows Gumbani’s LP ‘Warlord of the Weejuns’, released last year. The five-track EP ‘Bean Pie’ – co-produced by Joe Armon-Jones, Franky Bones, Blk Deco, and Velvetian Sky – is by comparison is looser and more freeform, comprised from disparate anecdotes and expressions in time.

He says:

“These songs came from different moments. Some are fresh, some have been sitting around and changing shape with me. They each have their own flavour, their own little world. Somewhere along the way, I started thinking about them like the different beans that go into a bean pie, separate things, picked up at different times, but once you put them together, they become something else.”

The EP is imbued Gumbani’s tried and tested jazz phrasing but there’s an urgency to his flow, matched by pacier, chrome-lined beats like on ‘Geronimo’ and ‘Hold It Up’. Joe Armon-Jones features on the languid opener ‘’, and rapper SALIMATA adds narrative heft to closer ‘Pretty Lady, WYA’ which memorialises a late-night encounter with a girl who disappears and is resigned to memory.

Tune into the EP and watch the video for ‘Come or GO’, directed by Boris Holmes.
