Gogglebox is welcoming two new households for season 28, and among them the show's first cast member with Down's syndrome.

The nation's beloved armchair critics are returning to screens tonight (4 September), with new additions Newcastle brothers Steve and Mark and London mother and son Sandy and Max.

TV fanatic Max is the first person with Down's syndrome to feature on the show, with Sandy saying it will be "total magic" to appear alongside her son.

"To have people see the superstar, who is my son, and realise that a person with a learning disability can be smart, opinionated and hilarious is very important for me," she said.

Max added: "I’m much funnier than my mum, so that’s good. I’m all about spreading the love and showing other learning-disabled people what we can achieve. And my mum is my greatest supporter."

The pair might not always agree when it comes to TV, with Max admitting Sandy "probably" won't always agree with him.

He said: "I watch a lot of programmes! I get the What’s On TV guide every week and highlight what I want to watch so I can record it. It’s a major part of my life and I love it. I watch The Hit List, The Grand Tour, Gavin and Stacey, and Amandaland, but my favourite one is Glee."

For brothers Steve and Mark, they'll be making sure "not to swear too much" after warnings from their families.

Mark said: "Everyone’s absolutely stoked. When I told our mam that we might be doing the show, the first thing she said was ‘please don’t swear’. I told her I can’t make that promise. I’ve not told my friends yet. I think waiting for them to read or see me on the TV will be a better surprise."

"We’re both married so the only time we really watch TV together these days is when the football is on. Sometimes boxing if there’s a big fight on (and it’s not happening at daft o’clock in the morning)," Mark explained. "When it comes to football, Steve is the one who’ll be screaming at the TV most of the time. I’m shocking for scrolling social media when I’m watching. I usually look up at the telly again when Steve starts screaming at it."

Steve added: "We actually don’t normally watch tv together, it mostly at our own homes and then group chats about what we’ve watched, what we think and most importantly what we would recommend."

Alongside the newcomers are a number of familiar faces, including Jenny and Lee, Sophie and Pete and The Siddiqui family.

The series has also been nominated in the factual entertainment category at this year's National Television Awards. It goes up against 24 Hours in Police Custody, Secret Garden, Sort Your Life Out and The Martin Lewis Money Show Live in the same category.

Speaking of the show being nominated, Lee said: "I just think, we’re still there. If we're still getting nominated, we are still doing something right, and the public still loves it."
