Netflix has released the full trailer for its upcoming adaptation of John Steinbeck's East of Eden, giving fans a good look at Florence Pugh in action as one of literature’s most iconic villains.
The seven-part series, which is being billed as a "fresh interpretation" of the 1952 novel, is set in California's Salinas Valley, and follows decades in the lives of Cathy Ames, the matriarch of the Trask family and the novel’s antihero, her husband Adam (Christopher Abbott) and his half-brother Charles (Mike Faist).
Along the way, their paths cross with people like Samuel Hamilton (Ciarán Hinds), an Irishman who made his way to California where he raised a family, and Lee (Hoon Lee), a Chinese American whose intellect is surpassed only by his ability to give care to those who need it most, as well as brothel owner Faye (Martha Plimpton).
The new trailer gives fans a glimpse at Cathy's villainy, as Charles tells Adam: "A girl like that doesn‘t just fall out of the sky."
"You need to get rid of her and throw her out. She‘s going to tear you to pieces and I don‘t want to watch it," Adam later tells Charles.
Meanwhile, Cathy is heard saying in the footage: "Evil is not always apparent at first glance. It can come cloaked in goodness or beauty or love. The heart of our oldest stories."

The new series has been penned by Zoe Kazan, whose grandfather Elia Kazan previously directed a 1955 movie adapted from Steinbeck's novel.
Zoe recently told Tudum of the adaptation: "The thing that was really important to me was to stay rooted in the text of the book when it came to exploring who Cathy is.
"Basically everything that’s in the series has at least a root in the book."
