First Take: Fontaines D.C. – ‘Marianne’

The stakes are higher now. When Fontaines D.C. launched their previous album, the band were Big In Indie Circles. Released to unanimous acclaim in 2024, lifted the Dublin group up a level – capable of selling out , they’re now bona fide festival headliners.

New album ‘Dopamine Chamber’ stays true to their thrilling work ethic – their fifth album in seven years, not counting frontman Grian Chatten’s fine solo LP, it lands on October 16th.

Lead single ‘Marianne’ is out now, and it finds Fontaines D.C. toying with the arena-level spaces they find themselves in. Produced once more by , the group continue to inject shoegaze tapestries of sound into their creative practice, building outwards in the process.

A song that toys with colour and tone, ‘Marianne’ is at once both direct and oblique – there’s a physical urgency to the sound, but the details are often hidden, kept tantalisingly out of reach. Following the band’s recent work on the HELP 2 album, ‘Marianne’ feels like a logical step beyond ‘Romance’ – aspects of that album’s character remain, but there’s a yearning sensibility at play here, a desire to step into the new.

Grian Chatten’s lyrics are, as ever, fascinating; we await the realisation of his long-held ambition to craft a book of poetry, but ‘Marianne’ sits as some typically find work from the adept wordsmith.

A song about utilising hedonism and escapism as identity, it deals in fleeting glances; an ode to freedom but also destruction, ‘Marianne’ leaves the lines blurred in devastating fashion. He sings: “This year, you should come and stay here / You can follow my lead / I can help you disappear…”

Having probed identity – their Irishness, their place amid a diaspora – the lyrics turn inward, and reflect a kind of beautiful ugliness we as a society have managed to plunge ourselves into. In a note to fans, Grian reflected on the album: “I felt it would be more powerful to leave the hope out and reflect the ugliness honestly. This one needed to feel more like a catastrophic warning.”

The first glimpse of their next step, ‘Marianne’ is a vivid klaxon, and a crucial alarm.

Our mark? 8/10.
