Wedding bells are ringing in Emmerdale – but by the time the day is out, there may be three funerals.
Ruthless businessman Joe Tate can’t wait to marry Dawn Fletcher (Olivia Bromley), who’s pregnant with their child. However, she thinks he’s a monster, and has been secretly planning to jilt him at the altar to start a new life abroad with her ex-husband Billy (Jay Kontzle) and their children.
Dawn believes that Joe is responsible for brutally attacking Billy. The real culprit was Kev Barton (Chris Coghill), who drunkenly confessed to Billy early this week that he attacked him to leave no witnesses in a robbery. Still, Billy kept this secret from Dawn as he still has lingering feelings for her.
Besides, the plan is already in motion thanks to Caleb Miligan (William Ash) and Ruby (Beth Cordingly), who aided Dawn and Billy as revenge against Joe Tate for years of his sins against them. The nefarious duo refused to let them flee before the wedding day, so Joe would suffer maximum humiliation.
Things went wrong on the wedding day when Joe’s mentor Graham Foster (Andrew Scarborough) caught Dawn packing her suitcases. Panicking, she knocked him out and tied him up in the stable. Worse still, Caleb seethed to hear Joe toasting ‘new beginnings’ in the Woolpack and ended up blowing his revenge plan out of pure spite.
Meanwhile, Jimmy King (Nick Miles) has been coming to terms with selling his family business to Caleb and Ruby to pay for his son’s education. After weeks of hiding huge debt from his wife Nicola King (Nicola Wheeler), Jimmy planned to re-affirm their love by proposing a vow renewal – with no idea that he was about to be caught up in the wedding from hell.
In today’s episode (Wednesday 26 August), Joe is aghast to realise the extent of Caleb’s revenge and rushes off to confront Dawn.
Meanwhile, Dawn’s about to flee with Billy. But after her run-in with Graham, she’s got serious doubts about Joe’s guilt as she demands to know how Billy knew it was Joe when he was attacked from behind. This leads to the devastating realisation that Billy has been lying to her, and she trusted the wrong man.
Jilted, a self-destructive Joe drinks heavily and trashes his own wedding marquee just as Dawn rushes in, begging his forgiveness. She implores Joe to still marry her... right before Jimmy’s car comes crashing into the marquee.
