has shared her interpretation of ‘Tutu’.
The Mercury Prize-nominated musician has long sought inspiration in the work of the mercurial trumpeter, with Emma-Jean Thackray deciding to go deep on a new project.
Out now as a limited edition vinyl release, ‘Dear Miles: A Love Letter’ will be placed on streaming from December 4th.
The energy and focus on the project stems from rehearsals surrounding a show at key London jazz venue Ronnie Scott’s, and material finds Emma-Jean overhauling Miles’ work from a contemporary angle.
Reflecting on her first encounter with Davis’s music, Emma-Jean writes:
“Our first encounter was an accident. I was learning a brass band solo piece, Concerto de Aranjuez, and found your version on an illegal download site. ‘Who is this Miles Davis guy?’. No-one in my provincial orbit knew your name, so I assumed you were just some guy, and that I discovered you.”
‘Tutu’ is a late period Miles Davis gem – check out her take on it below.
