Dutch Uncles ready their first six-piece album Polygon Hotel

The Stockport-formed sextet will release the LP ahead of dates including Glasgow’s Nice N Sleazy on 5 March, Manchester’s Band on the Wall on 10 March, and London’s 100 Club on 18 March. is their first record as a six-piece, with Henry Broadhead and Neil Wright joining Duncan Wallis, Robin Richards, Peter Broadhead, and Andy Proudfoot as full-time members. It was recorded at The Arch Recording Studio in Southport and Giant Wafer in Llanbadarn Fynydd, with Wallis’s vocals tracked at Dead Door Studio in Stockport. The band produced and mixed the album, and Felix Davis mastered it.

“No Note” is out now and was described by Wallis as as “a three-minute lament on time wasted looking at one’s phone. Specifically, time spent on social media and a regret that so much of our lives has been invested into the engine of social media, just for it to be snatched up and controlled by the worst people imaginable.” He said the lyrics took five minutes to write, ironically.

The track began with a marimba motif from bassist and principal composer Robin Richards, which the band fed through a randomising looper pedal before jamming over the output.

Richards said: “This was the first of several experiments in self-sampling from practice room sessions, which continued to be a feature on several other songs on the album.”

The Patrick King-directed video for “No Note” uses early PlayStation-inspired graphics by animator Miles Buckle, with references to Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, Guitar Hero, Tekken, and FIFA; it features the band battling themselves outside Greggs and rescuing a speedboat from a junkyard. The album title comes from a disused pub in Levenshulme, Manchester, which Wallis says became an imagined home for the record’s characters and stories.
