Dummy – Do You Love The Color Of The Sky

Electronic in nature, ‘Do You Love The Color Of The Sky’ leaves the ears once the album concludes. Created without the intent of release this project plays as a voyeuristic peek into who they are as a group – sound translated into language that communicates to an audience willing to reciprocate.

Opener ‘April Limousine’ places listeners in a dream state as the beat builds up for the first minute, a feeling of floating set within the introduction of vocals – tastefully enhanced as an instrument alongside the synth and percussion. A steady ambiance is established from the get go, each technical choice straying away from the boring and easily digestible curse.

One of the stronger segments unfurls during ‘Full Spectrum Dominance’ – the instrumental pulled back like an arrow and pushed back in creating a heartbeat and then going into a full breakdown – distorted guitar and vocals took over before the song dropped to a steady groove, transitioning to the next track.

Across ‘C.B.B.S.I.M.M.P.W.M’ Dummy really lean into the instrumental aspects, forcing people to focus on the music while giving the band a chance to breathe through the waves of sound.

They possess such a distinct energy that can only be formed when music is created from an insular place. Even if the genre isn’t to one’s liking, it’s difficult to ignore the pure intellect that had to go into connecting all the different sounds in ‘Do You Love The Color Of The Sky’ – experimenting without making the songs sound like a jumble of sounds. It’s sonically disorienting but also incredibly cohesive in what it’s trying to communicate to the audience, and to the band.

Projects like this truly reveal the strengths and weaknesses of a musician, as there’s nowhere to hide when the instrumental is laid out bare and open to critique. It’s a bold choice, one that works in Dummy’s favour.
