Doctor Who favourites and beloved pop icon join Cynthia Erivo in animated musical Bad Fairies

Three Doctor Who stars – including a certified pop superstar – are set to join Cynthia Erivo in the all-star voice cast of new animated movie, Bad Fairies.

The upcoming musical family adventure, which follows "characters who break the rules to do some good", will see Kylie Minogue, Jonathan Groff and Catherine Tate lend their voices to key characters.

According to Variety, Erivo made the announcement on Thursday evening during a performance of her "Let Me Sing To You" concert at the Hollywood Bowl. To make the announcement even more special, she brought Groff and Tate out on stage before pointing out Minogue who was also in the audience.

In Bad Fairies, Minogue will voice Clowder the Cat Witch, Groff will play Robin Goodfellow, while Tate will lend her vocals to the Fairy Gothmother.

All three have connections to Doctor Who, with Tate playing long-time companion Donna Noble on the sci-fi series, and Groff playing the dashing alien bounty hunter Rogue in 2024.

Minogue also starred in the BBC series, appearing alongside David Tennant as Astrid Peth in the 2007 Titanic-themed Christmas special, Voyage of the Damned.

Speaking on the new role, Minogue said in a statement: "I’m so excited to be part of Bad Fairies alongside the incredible Cynthia Erivo, Jonathan Groff and such a brilliant cast of voices.

"And getting to play both a cat and a witch? It’s a little bit magical, a little bit mischievous and a whole lot of fun."

Megan Nicole Dong added of the casting: "Clowder needed to be impossibly glamorous and hilariously chaotic in the same breath, and Kylie was always the dream.

"She has made the character completely her own, and she brings this amazing energy to the booth that ends up in every frame."

While co-director Olivier Staphylas said of the news: "Jonathan finds the comedy and the heart in a character at exactly the same time, which is everything Robin Goodfellow needs, and there is no one funnier than Catherine to play our Fairy Gothmother.

"Our animators are building on our fabulous actors’ instincts and comic timing to create characters that feel both larger than life and genuinely real."

The trio join the already announced cast, which includes Ncuti Gatwa (who played The Doctor from 2023 to 2025).

Other stars confirmed to be lending their voice to Bad Fairies include The Celebrity Traitors’ James Acaster as Stickers, rising star Serrana Su-Ling Bliss as Fei Chang, and Spongebob Squarepants voice actor Dee Bradley Baker as Groundbeef.

Erivo leads the cast as Jayne Staplegun in the story, set in a secret magical world hidden beneath modern-day London.

Bad Fairies is coming to cinemas on 27 May 2027.
