Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) has torn strips off mum Bernie Winter-Alahan (Jane Hazlegrove) in Coronation Street.

It comes following the death of his maternal great-aunt Celeste Butterfield (Frances Barber), who lost her battle against breast cancer. In the hours prior to her death, she told Gemma Winter-Brown (Dolly-Rose Campbell) that a number of their relatives had all died from cancer, leaving her wondering whether they carried a familial BRCA (Breast Cancer) gene mutation.

This mutation means inheriting a harmful change in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes from a parent, which significantly raises your lifetime risk of developing certain cancers.

Bernie was completely oblivious to the family history, though has promised her clan that she'll undergo tests to discover whether she is carrying the gene or not.

In today's episode, Gemma was terrified by the prospect of developing hereditary cancer, and wondered what it might mean for her quadruplets. She promised her mum that she'd accompany her to the appointment, and would support her no matter the outcome.

Over at the caff, Roy Cropper (David Neilson) made an off-the-cuff comment about how a person's dislike of coriander was inherited from their parent, causing Kit to squirm. As confirmed in a recent press release, he's already living with stage three breast cancer.

Later, Dr Gaddas (Christine Mackie) tried to reassure Bernie, saying that she should try and stay positive until she knew otherwise. The results could take a while to come through, and there was no point in worrying.

Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) then gathered the extended Winter family together to listen to a letter that Celeste had left for them.

Kit stood awkwardly at the side, listening to his great-aunt's final words. Celeste detailed her wish that Bernie wouldn't have the gene, and that she'd never die alone like she did.

That night, during a tough conversation with Bernie, Kit spelled out that they'd never have been in this situation if she'd kept in touch with Celeste.
