"Mosquito" arrives as {C}{O}{M}{B}'s second release on Brace Yourself Records, following previous release "Future Days". The song features guest vocals from Morris, who narrates a lost romance over the duo's "British pastoral psychedelia", which is comprised of found sounds made from everyday items ranging from pieces of wood to metal bowls.
“I always thought a Tom Waits-like vocalist would really suit the track so I sent the instrumental to Tony,” vocalist Jim Dixon explains. “He loved it and quickly sent the vocal over that is on the track. I arranged it a bit and put in the harmonies and we had it. All very quick and painless. I love his words and delivery and I think he really compliments the track.”
“I loved ‘Mosquito’,” Morris adds. “My lyrics tend to be about the small sorrows and pleasures of everyday life. The letter idea came from two sources: Firstly, I’ve always liked popular songs where someone sends or receives a letter e.g. ‘The Letter’ by The Box Tops or ‘Return To Sender’ by Elvis Presley. Secondly, I was listening to the commentary on a tennis match where the pundit was opining that the winner had comprehensively dismantled his opponent’s game, exploiting his weaknesses and basically reducing him to a wreck. I wondered how the loser felt. Would he agree with this analysis? Could he receive his thrashing but be full of admiration for how the winner had gone about it - and then just move on? So I translated that scenario to the age old subject matter of the letter with the news that one had been jilted.”
