‘Bowie80’ to celebrate late icon’s milestone birthday in 2027 – with special events, releases, collaborations and more

‘Bowie80′, a series of special events, releases, collaborations and more, are arriving worldwide to celebrate what would have been the late music icon’s 80th birthday. Find all the details below.

The new series of events starts today (Monday October 5) and will run throughout 2027, arriving in celebration of what would have been David Bowie’s 80th birthday on January 8.

As part of the collection, there will be special events, releases, anniversaries, collaborations and fan experiences around the world, as well as limited-edition merchandise made especially for the occasion.

To kick off the initiative is a new partnership with Nordstrom, who will be celebrating the music legend with three immersive shops in its Seattle, NYC, and Chicago flagships. Each will hold a range of exclusive and limited-edition collections, and collaborations also come from Undercover, Marc Jacobs, Paul Smith, and AllSaints.

Also in the US, there is a celebration of Bowie from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, which is hosting a retail pop-up that will run from mid-November up until January across its museum store, online shop, and airport location. The Rock Hall will also be holding some fan events, including Bowie-themed presentations, trivia, and an exhibition. More details about the latter, including the photographers included in the exhibition will be announced at a later date.

Other new events as part of ‘Bowie80’ include Strange Fascination – a major photography exhibition celebrating the artistry and evolution of the songwriter – which is held at Morrison Hotel Gallery in New York City and West Hollywood next February, as well as a new live symphonic concert production called ‘BOWIE (breaking) GLASS’.

The latter is developed by Schirmer Theatrical together with Østre Gasværk Teater, and
brings Bowie’s iconic songs into a new musical and visual dialogue with Philip Glass. It will have its world premiere in Copenhagen in Spring 2027.

Limited edition merchandise for the celebration of Bowie’s 80th birthday will be launched by Perryscope Productions, longtime merchandising representatives for David Bowie, on his webstore, and further collaborations include partnerships with Phix, Rockoff, Rowdy Sprout, Roots of Fight, Stoned Immaculate, Girl Skateboards and more. More details about the collaborations will be announced at a later date.

The celebrations of Bowie’s milestone birthday come after another huge celebration of the late singer launched earlier this year at London’s Lightroom. David Bowie: You’re Not Alone is a visual spectacle that tells his story using iconic performances, rarely seen interviews, and never-before-exhibited material, as well as huge screens and state-of-the-art audio.

To align with ‘Bowie80’, the show will be launching in Manchester and Brighton, as well as its first European venue, Port des Lumières in Hamburg.

On top of that, there will also be another collaboration with the V&A in London for ‘Bowie80’ – this time showing artefacts from Bowie’s 90,000-item archive. After launching in London, it will head on tour, going to Dundee and Blackpool in 2027, before visiting further venues in 2028 and 2029.

Earlier this year, a previously unheard David Bowie demo titled ‘Today’ was released. It was taken from an album that showcased a series of Early David Bowie songs from 1965 which featured a pre-Led Zeppelin Jimmy Page.

As well as the new album, it was also confirmed that the house Bowie wrote many of his early songs in (4 Plaistow Grove) would be restored and will be open to the public in 2027.

Back in 2019, also looked at Bowie’s early music and spoke to his close friends and collaborators about the documentary .

“He was incredibly resilient, and you see that in those early years – that ability to get up off the floor when something goes wrong,” director Francis Whately told NME of those early years. “It made him stand out. When he had knocks, he had the ability to see them for what they were, which was just a phase. They may have freaked out anyone who hadn’t experienced quite so much disappointment in their early lives.”
