have opened the doors to their debut EP. The band’s four-track ‘At The Nepo’ arrives on October 30th, and new single ‘The Nepo A Go Go’ is out now.
Spread across Powys, Tottenham and Birmingham, Body Horror sit where post-punk tension meets the sweatier end of the London rave lineage. Think The Prodigy colliding with Viagra Boys, with the menace of The Birthday Party lurking at the back of the room.
‘The Nepo A Go Go’ was produced by Syd Kemp, whose credits run from Olivia Dean and Jessie Ware to Caroline, Crack Cloud and The Horrors. It’s built on an industrial chassis and a rolling, oddly danceable beat. Welsh vocalist Gethyn Thomas spits out a clipped, rhythmic delivery over serrated guitar lines. A single relentless riff drives the track, coiled tight through the verses before it boils over into a chorus that repeats until it becomes hypnotic.
The target is a familiar one, the nepotism running through London’s music scene, but the delivery isn’t. The song is set in a fictional club, and it’s the second half of a two-part piece.
“I’ve always liked songs about places,” the band explain. “Like Copacabana by Barry Manilow. They’re usually hokey. But I wanted to take a song about a fictional venue/club and try to use it to talk about the rampant nepotism I see in the London music scene.”
“Part one ‘At The Nepo’ is about entering a fictional club called The Nepo A Go Go: ‘A womb with a view, the heirloom umbilical’. And part two is a self reflection while I’m at the venue and trying to address the bigger issues it conjures up: ‘just another Westerner with a seriously privileged appendage’.”
Body Horror have earned their keep the hard way. They’ve had plays across BBC 6 Music and BBC Wales and backing from So Young and Hard Of Hearing. They’ve toured Europe with Alabama 3 and opened for Maquina. They also recorded with Faris Badwan, and The Horrors have spun them during their 6 Music residency.
‘At The Nepo’ is out October 30th.
